The company I once worked for organized a seminar in which members of my department were required to attend. The seminar was also attended by members of several other companies who shared the same interest. It was a one-week seminar that was hosted by very influential people in my career path. The whole seminar was all about how to improve the productivity of the organization by the incorporation of external factors such as technology. After a week of fruitful learning and interaction which very creative and idealistic members of my career field, it was time to team up according to the members of each organization.
The main purpose of creating teams was to come up with ideas on how best each of our organizations would use technological resources in our environment to increase productivity in our organizations. The fastest team that would come up with the optimal idea that will ensure maximized productivity was to get a reward. Having been raised in a technological environment, I was passionate and well knowledgeable on the topic. Sadly, my team members were not well conversant with the technological world and could hardly come up with good ideas.
This was a very golden opportunity where I could easily go as an individual and I was sure to impress the whole panel selected to analyze our ideas and how it would help the organization. This was a chance to finally get recognized for what I am passionate about and an opportunity to shine and earn a recommendation from the panelist. However, by doing this, I will be leaving my team members with no guidance and this would make their task very difficult. If my team fails, it would paint a very bad picture for the company given they were one of the main hosts. By helping the team however meant that we might not be good enough to make it as the best team because I would have to explain the whole ideas and ensure that every team member should be able to understand and explain it to the panel when called upon.
I chose to stay with my teammates because the organization was very keen on teamwork and I wanted to maintain a good relationship with my workmates. We worked as a group towards coming up with ideas on how best to improve our company. My team members were able to get a better understanding of the topic and we were able to present our ideas to the panel. The panel was very pleased with our analysis and recommendation and we were rated as the second-best group in the seminar team competition. After the seminar, we presented a report about the whole experience and the organization was very proud of our performance. The organization also put our ideas into consideration for the improvement of company performance.
In the future, when faced by a conflict that needs me to choose between empowering other people and my performance, I will make the same decision of empowerment over personal performance. through my experience, I was able to realize that teamwork is always beneficial to all parties. While enlightening my team members on technology, I was able to realize some things which I had never put into consideration. Once my team members were able to grasp the concept regarding the subject topic, they were very helpful in identifying other solutions and came up with other ideas which when incorporated to my initial ideas gave a more comprehensive solution.
Teamwork and sharing of ideas also enabled me to have a different perspective towards situations which enabled me to view problems from different angles thus coming up with better ideas. When my team asked questions regarding my ideas and concepts, I was able to identify flaws that we were able to rectify to create a flawless flow of ideas. I also enjoyed working in a team and having to explain different concepts to the team members. Although I never got to achieve my personal goals and perform as expected, I was able to grow and realize that empowering other people is a greater achievement than focusing on achieving selfish goals. We all need people to empower and help us towards achieving our goals.
I prefer a democratic leadership style because it allows each team member to make more contributions. Everybody gets a chance to participate, seamlessly shared amongst group members, and discussions are encouraged. While this style will in general spotlight on team equality and the free progression of ideas, the leader of the group is still there to offer direction and guidance. The leader is in charge of choosing the group members and deciding on the members that contribute to decision making.
