The term ‘special educational needs and disabilities’ (SEND) was first introduced in the 1944 Education Act in the United Kingdom and has since been used to refer to those who require additional educational support due to physical, mental, emotional, and sensory impairments. These conditions may need to improve a student’s capacity to learn, access the curriculum, and participate in regular school activities (Ainscow et al., 2015). The term ‘special educational needs’ (SEN) has become synonymous with the term ‘disability’ and is often used to refer to those with impairments that impede their learning or development. However, the phrase “special needs” has also been used to refer to those who do not have a handicap but may need extra help because of learning difficulties such as learning disabilities, speech, and language difficulties, or behavioral concerns. Thus, the word “SEND” refers to persons who may need additional educational help due to various physical, mental, emotional, and sensory problems.

- CHALLENGING GENDER DISPARITIES: INSIGHTS INTO WORKPLACE INEQUALITY IN NIGERIAAbstract The issue of gender inequality in the workplace has recently attracted scholarly attention globally. In Nigeria, cultural norms and institutional structures are co-dependent and affected by the notion of gender roles, which leads to disparities in work opportunities, treatment, and wages. This study explores the issue of gender inequality in the Nigerian workplace and the impact of gender roles in advancing this inequality. A sample of 130 professionals, including CEOs, managers, HR professionals, and employees in various sectors are recruited to contribute to a deeper understanding of the effects of inequality on women’s representation in the workplace, persistent stereotyping, and discriminatory practices. Using a mixed methods approach, data is collected through online surveys on the following variables: career development, workplace culture, and attitudes toward gender roles. The findings provide valuable insights for future initiatives to advance inclusivity and equity as well as adding to the discourse on gender equality in Nigerian workplaces.
