- Examining the intersection of raceW.E.B. Du Bois's short stories, particularly "The Comet," resonated with me due to their exploration of the complex relationship between race, class, and the potential for societal transformation. While the apocalyptic scenario in "The Comet" presents a unique setting, it reflects Du Bois's broader concerns about racial inequality and the potential for a new social order. Research Questions How does Du Bois utilize the science fiction genre in "The Comet" to explore themes of race and class? Does "The Comet" offer a concrete vision of a new society emerging from the ashes of the old, or does it remain focused on the critique of the present social structure? What critical scholarship exists on Du Bois's short stories, specifically relating to the intersection of race, class, and his portrayal of potential societal change? Research Strategy To answer these questions, I will begin by closely rereading "The Comet" and analyzing its narrative elements and themes. I will then utilize academic databases available through my university library and search for scholarly articles and books that explore Du Bois's short stories through the lens of race, class, and societal transformation. Additionally, I will search for literary criticism specific to "The Comet" and similar works within the science fiction genre that deal with social commentary. Annotated Bibliography 1. Gates, Henry Louis. "The Souls of Black Folk: W.E.B. Du Bois and the Problem of the Color Line." Oxford University Press, USA, 1994. Henry Louis Gates's book offers an in-depth examination of W.E.B. Du Bois's seminal work, "The Souls of Black Folk." While not directly centered on "The Comet," Gates's analysis sheds light on Du Bois's concept of "double consciousness" and the challenges faced by Black Americans in a racially divided society. By delving into Du Bois's broader thematic concerns, Gates's framework becomes a crucial resource, enhancing the understanding of Du Bois's intricate exploration of race and societal dynamics. This insightful perspective serves as a valuable foundation for my analysis of "The Comet," allowing for a nuanced interpretation of how Du Bois's overarching themes permeate his various works. 2. Gilroy, Paul, and Ruth Wilson Gilmore. "Selected Writings on Race and Difference." (2021). Gilroy et al exploration of the "racial imaginary" in contemporary society provides crucial insights into the fluid and evolving nature of racial discourse. While Gilroy 's analysis does not center on W.E.B. Du Bois, it proves instrumental in framing my examination of whether "The Comet" delineates a tangible vision for a new society or functions primarily as a critique of the existing social order. Gilroy 's exploration of floating signifiers and post-racial politics becomes a pertinent lens through which to assess Du Bois's narrative, offering a nuanced perspective on the potential limitations and possibilities embedded within the imagined futures presented in "The Comet." 3. Robinson, Rebecca R. "Du Bois's "The Comet": An Afrofuturist Parable of Racial Uplift." Science Fiction Studies, vol. 40, no. 1, 2013, pp. 53-74. This article directly examines "The Comet" through the lens of Afrofuturism, a literary movement that explores the experiences and aspirations of people of African descent through science fiction and speculative fiction. By analyzing Robinson's work, I can gain insights into how Du Bois utilizes the science fiction genre to address issues of race and class specifically, potentially answering my research questions about the story's thematic elements and portrayal of societal change. Conclusion Through research, I aim to answer my initial questions about the intersection of race, class, and societal transformation in "The Comet." Based on my preliminary research, I anticipate learning how Du Bois utilizes the science fiction genre to critique existing social structures and potentially offer a vision for a more equitable future, even if it remains ambiguous.
