Events contributing to the nursing shortage
As reported by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), Nursing as a profession is facing student enrollment shortage. It’s been noted that very few students enroll for the Nursing course compared to the increased number of required qualified registered nurses in the field (Rosseter, 2015).
Stress in the work field
Decreased number of enrolled nurses with increased work in the field, has led to many of the staff to leave from the nursing profession. Due to the shortage of Nursing staff, more of the staff are facing a significant amount of stress while providing giving care. As a result, become dissatisfied with their work and decides to opt-out (Rosseter, 2015).
Retirement
It has been projected that in about 10 to 15 years, the nursing profession is going to face a tremendous shortage of nurses. This is according to the report made on the issue of a huge number of nurses in the field currently is of 50 years and above. This age group is expected to retire soon and with a reduced enrollment of new nurses, there is going to be a significant shortage of nurses soon (Rosseter, 2015).
Shortage of nursing facilities
There is a shortage of nursing facilities in the country. A report has shown that the country is facing a shortage of facilities to accommodate many students. Students had to be turned away and with this, there will be a continued shortage of nurses in the fields (Rosseter, 2015).
Strategies are underway to ensure that the shortage of nurses is dealt with. For instance, Nursing schools forming partnerships giving out funds to increase student enrollment and also to build more facilities and clinical sites (Rosseter, 2015).
Addressing the nursing shortage
Launching of the Nursing’s Centralized Application Service (NursingCAS). This was to ensure that all students were enrolled and all the required needs met by including the graduate programs (Rosseter, 2015).
The 12 partnerships addressing the shortage of nurses based on the newsletter by Robert Wood Johnson Foundation that was focused on expanding nursing (Rosseter, 2015).
