Critique analysis on a research by Arden University students on poliomyelitis prevalence, severity and disability on the patients in urban India.
The students of Aberdeen University carried out research on prevalence and severity of joint problems and disability to the patients of poliomyelitis in urban India. The research is quite informative and factual yet lacks clarity at some points as illuatrated below.
Information on the research statement is provided through a good flow of statements. There is illustration of the cause of this ailment as enterovirus infection of the interior horn cells in the spinal cord. Further illustrations on the most vulnerable parts of infection and the age group are given as the lower limb and children consecutively. Besides,it is indicated that adults suffer more serious complications from the ailment despite being less prone to contracting poliomyelitis. The research comprises of explicit facts from a physical observation carried out on 26 patients; half of whom are females while the other half consists of male patients. It is also observed that out of the 26 patients, more than half of them are suffering from the same deformity: prescavus which apparently is the most common deformity. The other forms of deformity were seen to be as follows: scoliosis, flexion deformity of the knee and true lower limb shortening.
The information is made reliable by precise use of factual examples and informative illustrations. These statements qualify the research for learning about poliomyelitis and getting to know it’s effect on urban India. The methodology is well illustrated and followed suit by clear findings in relation to the results derived from the test carried on a number of poliomyelitis patients. Besides, the research contains well illuatrated information on surgery; the number of patients who had had surgery concerning this matter and the approximate number of those that had declined it.
However, the information lacks clarity. The introductory part is devoid of a clear definition of the key term. Instead of elaborating the term poliomyelitis first, the cause is given. This makes the introduction incomplete because a person who is less informed on this matter may not know exactly what to expect from the research.
In conclusion, the research carried out on prevalence and severity of joint problems and disability to the patients of poliomyelitis by the students of Arden University is reliable but somehow lacks clarity. There are clear illustrations on the causes, means of transmission and the vulnerable parts of infection which are supported by factual evidence from results derived from a field research on patients. However, lack of the definition of the term poliomyelitis and general focus of the information renders the research unclear.
